Commuter Challenge Winners Announced

The 4th Annual Trails 2000 Commuter Challenge winners were announced Friday night at Carver Brewing Company. Participation increased again, with over 500 employees participating. Kicking off the awards, bicycle and trails supporter Michael Hurst was presented with a Trek Cruiser (courtesy of Trek Bikes and Trails 2000). "Verklempt," said Hurst. "And I was already a huge fan of Trails 2000!"

Challenge scores were based on percentage of participation, and included three categories: small companies (under 25); medium companies (26-199) and large companies (200 plus). To ramp up the competition and not leave the deciding winner to a game of rock/paper/scissors a bonus round was added allowing companies that logged participation days on Monday or Tuesday in addition to Bike to Work day to receive bonus points.

In the small company category, Russell Engineering won the award with the most bonus points. Ten companies had 100% participation including Maria's Bookshop, Columbine Landscape, FredickZink and Associates, Adaptive Sports, Technik, Inc, Chiropractic Durango and Balanced Recovery Massage and small businesses with over 80% participation included MBS, SME, Inc, Goff Engineering, Syndicom, Backcountry Experience and 4-CORE.

In the medium size category, Durango Orthopedics won with over 87% participation; First National Bank was 2nd followed by Axis Health Systems.

In the large size category, the City of Durango won with 22% participation and 101 bonus points just barely beating out Mercury Payment Systems; followed by LaPlata County, First National Bank, Mercy Hospital and Fort Lewis College. The workplace coordinators for the Challenge rallied the troops and inspired these businesses to compete. Sarah Jacobsen, workplace coordinator for LaPlata County said County staff commuted 2,317 during the Challenge.

The top awards incorporated a chain and chainring mounted onto a piece of wood designed and built by local builder, Jake Walsh.

Mark Rosenthal won the Trek District.

Thanks to everyone who participated!
