Beginner. 8.5 miles. One of three great rides accessed by the same trail head located about 15 miles from Cortez above the town of Dolores. This loop is popular with beginner riders as it is mostly flat with little technical riding. Great ride in summer because it is 1000 feet higher in elevation and is mostly shaded by tall Ponderosa pine. Mostly single track and some two track this ride is fun and fast. Best spring through fall.

Time: 1 – 3 hours
Elevation: 7580’ – 7870’

Trails: Mostly single track with some two track roads.

Maps: See Map C: SJNF map, USGS 7 1/2’, Boggy Draw, also highly

Mancos & Rico’ by Big Loop Maps©.

Access to trailhead: Beginning in downtown Dolores, turn north off of Highway 145 onto 11th Street and follow the road (which becomes County Road 31) up to the top of the mesa. Turn right (east) on Road W and travel approximately one mile until you cross a cattle guard and the forest boundary. The parking lot and trailhead is located on the left side of road once you enter the Forest boundary.

Ride Description: This is a popular ride with beginners because it is mostly flat. The trail weaves through scattered ponderosa pine, oak brush and an occasional meadow. Trail markers were recently put up by Deer Hill Expeditions as a volunteer project so watch for the carsonite posts at road crossings so you don’t get off track. The Boggy Trailhead also hosts three other trails that offer a wide variety of terrain and range of difficulties.
