• Hermosa Creek Trail Out & Back: Directions: Take 550 North from Town and turn left at Hermosa Park Road. Cross the railroad tracks and followup the road. Park at the southern Hermosa Creek Trailhead located about 4 miles up Lower Hermosa Road which starts near the railroad track crossing in the small town of Hermosa north of Durango.  Find the trail heading north near the junction of several dirt roads near the parking area.  This route is an out and back of the singletrack portion of Hermosa Creek Trail.  The main trail is very obvious.  You will see several trail junctions along the way, but the main Hermosa Creek Trail is always the most well-worn route.  The “out” portion is 12.7 miles of rolling terrain and gentle climbing and turns around and the Salt Creek Trail junction.  Just turn around and return the way from which you came!  Ride length is about 26 miles or about 5 hours.

  • Hermosa Creek Trail North to South: This route requires a shuttle.  Park your first vehicle at the same trailhead described in the out and back route and then drive your second vehicle up Highway 550 to Durango Mountain Resort and head up Hermosa Park Road to the “T” for Elbert Creek Road and Hermosa Park Road.  This is a good place to park and start your ride.  Alternatively you can call Hermosa Tours in Durango and arrange for a shuttle ride and avoid the two-car shuttle: www.hermosatours.net.  From the “T” junction continue on Hermosa Park Road, which soon turns left and out into the Hermosa Creek Valley.  Ride down this road for about 6 miles and turn left at the sign for Hermosa Creek Trail.  Or you can park at the T, and start the trail paralleling the road. This is a nice singletrack that keeps you away from the cars. The trail starts as a doubletrack trail at this northern end and will remain so for about 7 miles.  This northern section follows the creek closely and soon you will find yourself framed by steep canyon walls.  After about 7 miles you will reach the junction of Salt Creek Trail and the 12.7 mile singletrack section described in the “Out and Back” route.  Please note: this point-to-point route is NOT all downhill.  There are several small climbs and then a significant climb  with about 4 miles to go that is relatively steep and lasts about 1 mile.  Plan accordingly.    Ride length is approximately 27 miles with the Hermosa Park Road section factored into the beginning of the ride.
