- Trails 2000 Accomplishments Over The Years -
Telegraph Trail System
- Over 30 miles of trail, mostly singletrack
- In Durango; very convenient on the eastern edge of town with multiple access points
- Made many of these trails public
- Work with private landowners and government toward public ownership and seamless trails
- Designed & added new routes, parking and signs
- Maintain the trails each year
- Added the Sale Barn Trail & Trailhead - worked with BLM and built this 5 mile addition; established the convenient new trailhead
- Also added the Big Canyon Trail & Trailhead - worked with BLM and CDOT to build this 3-1/2 mile trail extension with new access and parking
OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION -- Durango Mountain Park (the "Test Track")
- Preserved this land on Durango's western edge as an Open Space Trails Park
- Initiated the project, held fund raisers and provided seed money
- Worked with government, coordinated tax incentives and brought partners together
- Now permanent and public, protected land
- 299 acres of open space, 15 miles of trail
Animas River Trail
Work with the City of Durango and private landowners to help extend & enhance our city's most valued trail (7 miles)
COLORADO TRAIL -- Maintenance & More
- Yearly maintenance and trail upgrades on our state's namesake trail
- Trails 2000 cares for our adopted segment (15 miles long) & more
- Several work days each year
- Constructed a new bench at the overlook known as "Gudy's Rest"
YOUTH
Yearly trail maintenance with kids; we help educate them and build their stewardship.
HORSE GULCH -- Cleanup
Almost every year Trails 2000 does a major cleanup
Animas City Mountain
- Trail MAINTENANCE since 1993; in cooperation with the BLM (8 miles)
- New signs installed at each trail intersection, each with a trail map and "You Are Here" indicator
Access Trail and Open Space
- Advocated for and worked with City & Open Space Groups toward the acquisition and preservation of the Birket parcel
- Identified a more sustainable and gentler route for the realigned access trail
- Organized VOLUNTEERS to build the better trail
- Restored the old route
- Succeeded in providing a quality trail system access from Birket Drive up to Animas City Mountain
County TRAILS PLAN
Co-partnered with La Plata County to establish the first county-wide trails master plan
PUBLIC LANDS ACCESS - CLIMBING AREA - EAST ANIMAS
- Trails 2000 was a key partner in establishing permanent legal access to the climbing cliffs on public land.
- Access was threatened
- Partners worked together
- New legal trail and safe parking area
- Working together towards public lands access
- Project success to serve as model for other access problems
TREE CLEARING
- Trails 2000 volunteers clear the trails of fallen trees each year
- Hundreds of trees are moved
- Chainsaws help
- Our motorless "Pocket Chainsaw" supplements - it cuts surprisingly well and is easy to carry
VALLECITO LAKE TRAIL
Almost every year, Trails 2000 teams up with Vallecito folks to care for their lakeside walking trail.
Kids To Schools
Extended the Animas River Trail south to Escalante Middle School
Dry Fork Trail & Hoffheins Connection
Worked with Forest Service to establish these routes and the loop (9 mile loop)
Hermosa Creek Trail
Clear the fallen trees nearly every spring (21 miles) - in recent years the San Juan Trail Riders have begun assisting with this work
Rim Trail and Campus Loop
With Trails 2000 volunteers and area youth groups, we built this trail overlooking Durango as well as the path around Fort Lewis College (3 miles)
Bodo Industrial Park
Worked with business community to provide these close-in trail opportunities (2 miles)
Signs (for trail user safety)
Installed trail intersection signs throughout the Telegraph Trail System, Animas Mountain, and Log Chutes
Log Chutes
Added to the network of old logging routes to develop this trail system (15 miles)
Monument Park motorized trail
Worked with other groups to reroute and sign this trail that's truly multiple use (5 miles)
Stevens Creek Trail
Made it more user friendly and upgraded the connection to Missionary Ridge (7 miles)
Pinkerton-Flagstaff and Dutch Creek Trails
Worked with horsemen to install better signs for trail user safety (11 miles)
"Share The Trails" & San Juan Mountains Association
Helped this nonprofit hold this fun and popular event promoting courtesy
Durango Nature Studies
Nearly every year we help this nonprofit develop and maintain the trail system at the Durango Nature Center (5 miles)
